Zoom Call with PM Jacinda Ardern

It's not every day you get to speak to the Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern

The Prime Minister of New Zealand Jacinda Ardern and Dave Letele, health leader and founder of BBM Motivation had a Zoom call last week. The video was shared on the Prime Minister's Facebook page on Friday evening and touched on issues relevant to our South Auckland Pasifika and Maori community on COVID-19 and accessing support. PM Jacinda Ardern and Dave demonstrate how easy it is to create a face-covering whilst sharing BBM’s Mantra of No Excuses – because there is no excuse to wear a mask and to do your part to minimise the risk and spread of COVID-19.

Dave later shared a post on his social media account that the opportunity to speak to the Rt Hon Jacinda Ardern was an emotional experience. He wrote:

“I just had to share this tonight‼️ 6 years ago I wanted to kill myself. 3 and a bit years ago we lived in a sleep out with no kitchen. Now, this.
I’m pretty emotional and just so happy with how far I have come in my life. What this shows, is what is possible…”

In 3 days since the video was shared, it has had 285K views, 1.1K shares and 13K reactions on Facebook. Our team have to now keep up with the Google alerts linking Dave’s name in international news articles from Reuters, Yahoo News and The New York Times to name a few.

We humbly thank PM Jacinda Ardern, it was an honour and a privilege to have the opportunity to share the work of BBM and talk about the impact COVID-19 has had on our community from a grassroots level. We are happy that we had the chance to ask questions about the Governments response during this time and open the discussion about encouraging our communities to access support and seek COVID-19 information from credible and expert sources.

We want to acknowledge Annique Davis and the team from the Ministry for Pacific Peoples for helping make this happen.
Thank you to all our supporters and sponsors for their continued backing of BBM’s vision which is to help reduce obesity in our communities.

The opportunity to connect with the Prime Minister of NZ is a win for us all and we will continue to push forward in building our relationships within the New Zealand Government to improve health outcomes for our people!
